Photovoltaic panels generate electricity when enough light reaches them. The inverter converts it for use in the home or business. A battery stores some of the energy for later, for example in the evening.
The right system size depends not only on the electricity bill but also on when most electricity is used. If consumption is higher in the evening, a battery may be useful. If more electricity is used during the day, a larger share of the solar output can be used directly.
More panels do not necessarily make a better investment. Roof orientation and condition, shading, available area, grid export options, and the actual electricity tariff all matter.
